Newly Approved COVID-19 Vaccine: Novavax Vaccine
What is this?
The Novavax COVID-19 Vaccine was approved by Health Canada on February 17, 2022. It is a protein-based vaccine administered as an injection and has been proven to be 90% effective at preventing COVID-19 infection beginning one week after the second dose.
What is a protein-based vaccine?
Protein-based vaccines mimic a protein found in the COVID-19 virus without being infectious in order to activate your immune system and build a defense against the actual virus. The technology for protein-based vaccines is older than that for mRNA vaccines (Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccines) and has been used for many other vaccinations, like the hepatitis vaccine.
What are the side effects?
Side effects include: Redness, soreness, swelling at the injection site, chills, fatigue, joint pain, headache, mild fever, muscle aches, nausea, and vomiting
Where can I get it?
The vaccine is available in many regions across Ontario. To request this vaccine, please consult your local public health unit. If you need any help booking your vaccine appointment, please email covid19@sicklecellanemiaca.live-website.com!
