Purpose of the Position
The Community Education Ambassador is responsible for the organization and operation of SCAGO’s community awareness and education program within the Greater Toronto Area. The incumbent will organize workshops for community agencies and boards including correctional services and school boards.
Working Environment
The Community Education Ambassador will work in an environment involving social and psycho-social issues of a complex, sensitive and at time urgent nature. He/she will work under tight time constraints while maintaining professionalism and efficiency. The position will work closely with key community stakeholders of the SCAGO. The work environment will be collaborative with a service-oriented and advocacy culture.
# Of Hours/ Job Type
Contract base 30 hours/week @ $25/hour. Incumbent will be required to work in-person2days/week at SCAGO’s office (start time TBD); work 2 Saturdays/month at one or more community health Centres; and work remote for the rest of the time except where other in- person meetings are necessary.
Reporting Relationship
The Community Education Ambassador works closely with the education coordinator, submits reports to this role as a part of building one report for the SCAGO’s education program. The incumbent reports to the Education committee chair (Board) and the management designate.
Specific Accountabilities/Deliverables
The Community Education Ambassador performs a wide range of duties including some or all of the following: He/she will also fulfil roles provided in this job description and as assigned by the CEO or her delegate.
The consultant will among other responsibilities:
Research and connect with various faith-based organizations and communities (GTA) to promote SCAGO’s programs in the communities affected by sickle cell disease not
limited to those with ancestry from Africa, Middle-East, Mediterranean, South-East Asia, and South America.
Liaise with appropriate individuals in schools, faith-based, and other community
organizations within the GTA to provide adequate education on SCD to the community
Revitalize SCAGO’s work with correctional facilities
Lead existing and new programs between SCAGO and its community partners
Attend on behalf of the SCAGO partners’ and collaborators’ meetings
Support the design and implementation of community education programs at
Community Health Centres.
Support the development of educational booklets, surveys, etc.
Document the socio-demographic data of the people engaged
Refer clients to counsellor for one-to-one consultation and counselling where necessary
Provide monthly and quarterly reports
Ensure that all communications and records are kept confidential and secure
Evaluate program by surveying community partners and program recipients.
Terms and Conditions
Term: The Community Education Ambassador position is contract based and the incumbent is expected to work for 30 hours/week from March 23rd, 2024 to December 31st 2024- nine-month contract (renewable).
Remuneration: The SCAGO shall pay $25/hour. Travel expenses outside of GTA will be reimbursed.
Qualifications; Skills and Expectations
A post-secondary education in a relevant field combined with several years related work experience, preferably within the non-profit sector or hospital
Knowledge of program coordination and issues related to chronic diseases
Effective engagement of patients and families
Proficiency with MS Office Suite, including advanced computer skills in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, databases and Outlook. Good knowledge and experience using
new/emerging technologies and software as well communication tools including email, phone, video conferencing etc.
Skill in gathering and reporting information and preparing presentations
Ability to exercise initiative, confidentiality, problem-solving, and decision-making.
Strong work ethic in doing what is takes to get the work done.
Excellent organizational and time management skills.
Excellent communication, both oral and writing skills and an aptitude for telephone calling.
Excellent analytical and leadership skills.
Ability to interface and engage diverse stakeholders.
Function well when faced with difficulties, tension, frustration and pressure.
Recognize possible areas of conflict, deals with them rapidly, appropriately and seeks
solutions.
Assess problem situations to identify causes, gather and process relevant information, generate possible solutions, and make recommendations and/or resolve the problem.
Possess a professional, collaborative, and upbeat approach to work.
Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, both verbal and written, and the ability to prioritize and work under tight deadlines.
Previous office experience and demonstration of good customer service skills.
Experience in planning educational events, particularly in a hospital or not for profit
environment
