Influenza, RSV and COVID-19
With the cold weather fast approaching, COVID-19 infections and other viral respiratory infections are on the rise. Why does this happen? Winter brings lower levels of humidity and temperatures, allowing for the easier transmission of viral particles in the air.
The holiday season also lends to increased transmission as people celebrate with their families. Currently, this increase in respiratory viruses, particularly Influenza A, RSV (respiratory syncytial virus), and COVID-19 have caused strain on hospitals across the province, and in particular pediatric wards.
There are strategies you can put in place to lower your risk of infection this holiday season and keep you and your family safe.
Here are some tips for staying healthy and safe this season!
- Make sure you are up to date with your vaccinations (e.g., COVID-19 booster, flu vaccine)
- Wash and sanitize your hands
- Mask up → Wear a well-fitted quality mask in indoor settings and around people that are most at risk (e.g., children under 5 years of age)
- Reduce your close contact with people in indoor settings.
Remember, if you are sick or are experiencing symptoms, please stay at home until the symptoms go away.
